TTT: My Favourite Halloween TV Specials

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

It has been many moons since I have done one of these but how can I resist a themed blog post? I love Halloween-themed TV episodes. Holiday episodes are a great excuse to parody famous stories and play with genre of the TV show – Halloween episodes in particular get to play with horror and the supernatural which I adore. A staple of these stories is also that they almost exist out of canon, like a bad dream letting the writers be very creative. So here are my top five Halloween specials.

1. Community – Epidemiology (S2 E6)

Community had a lot of fun with its Halloween episodes but my favourite special has to be Epidemiology. After eating expired meat, a party at Greendale turns everyone into zombies. The episode balances humour and horror really well but my favourite thing about this episode is the references in later seasons. Despite the world being reset to normal at the end of the episode, events in this episode affect main plot lines in the rest of the series.

2. Buffy – Halloween (S2, E6)

Buffy already deals with the supernatural so in this case, Halloween is quite fitting. My favourite is the season 2 episode entitled ‘Halloween’. In this episode, the Scoobie Gang transform into their costume. Buffy, dressed as an 18th century maiden, is absolutely useless as a slayer and it is a lot of fun seeing her act so vulnerable in contrast to her punching first approach.

3. The Simpsons – Treehouse of Horror

How can we have a Halloween specials list and not mention The Simpsons? The specials always parody famous films and pop culture and I’m going to cheat a little with this one because it’s too difficult to choose just one episode. So shout out to ‘Lisa’s Nightmare’ (based on The Monkey’s Paw), ‘Bart Simpson’s Dracula’ and ‘Time and Punishment’ (Homer finds himself in the past and keeps changing the future in weird and wacky ways.)

4. Brooklyn 99 – Halloween (various)

My sister really doesn’t like the Halloween specials but I think these are so much fun. I love a good heist story and this is basically Ocean’s 11 based in a sitcom and it’s just a lot of fun. Ridiculous and unrealistic, yes but fun. How many more times can I say fun?

5. Sabrina the Teenage Witch – Good Will Haunting (S3, E6)

In this episode, Sabrina is gifted an evil doll ‘Molly Dolly’ whilst her aunts get stuck in the other realm at a party in an insane asylum. Living dolls have a huge scope for horror but there’s a lot of humour in this episode too as we see Sabrina wrestling the doll in order to subdue it.

  1. Great take on this week’s Halloween freebie! Love the episode title “Good Will Haunting”! I think I actually remember this one and ugh, just thinking about that doll gives me the creeps. I really don’t do dolls 🙈 Haha

  2. Arub, I absolutely loved all of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and I enjoyed Sabrina the Teenage Witch was I was a kid. A lot of the TV shows I watched don’t really do Halloween specials, except Strictly Come Dancing. 😀
